A toddler was hurt during a drive-by shooting in west Tavares Tuesday night, officials said.

About 9 p.m., a 2-year-old child was playing outside in the 500 block of West Rosewood Lane when a car drove by and its occupants allegedly fired multiple shots at an apartment, said Cpl. Sarah Coursey of the Tavares Police Department.

The 2-year-old was struck in the abdomen and was taken to Florida Hospital Waterman for treatment. Coursey described the wound as “minor” and said the child is expected to make a full recovery.

Police do not yet know the identities of the suspects involved in the shooting or how many were in the vehicle, Coursey said. The suspects’ car has been described as a dark grey Chevrolet Malibu.

Tavares Police were shutting down the crime scene at about 10:15 p.m., but they will continue to investigate the case, Coursey said.

Those with information are asked to call Tavares Police at 352-742-6300 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477.
