Passengers were left stranded on a British Airways flight from London to Texas after a minor technical issue forced the plane to turn back mid-air. The nine-hour ordeal began when flight BA195 departed from Heathrow Airport at 10 am on Monday and had reached Newfoundland, Canada before having to return to the UK at 7 pm.
The decision to turn back was made after one of the Rolls-Royce Trent engines on the plane flagged a warning message as it approached Canada. While the issue was not an immediate safety concern, the crew opted to return to London Heathrow for inspection and engineering work as a precautionary measure.
A BA spokesperson addressed the situation, stating that the flight returned due to a minor technical problem and landed safely for passengers to disembark. The airline expressed apologies to customers for the disruption to their travel plans and rebooked them on alternative flights to Houston.
This is not the first time this particular aircraft has faced challenges in the air. In a previous incident in October, the same plane was forced to divert to Anchorage, Alaska when a passenger’s mobile phone caused smoke in the cabin during a flight from Tokyo to London, resulting in a 33-hour delay for passengers.
In a separate incident in January, another BA flight to Delhi had to turn back to the UK after three hours in the air due to a technical issue, leading to a seven-hour flight delay. These instances highlight the unpredictability of air travel and the importance of safety measures taken by airlines to ensure passenger well-being.
