This healthy format has made its way into the offerings of supermarkets and restaurants while gaining followers in homes: 20% of Spaniards already regularly prepare it at home, according to an IPSOS survey for the Seafood Council. from Norway
This Thursday, September 28, International Poke Day (or ‘poké’) is commemorated around the world, a format that is experiencing a true revolution in Spain, to the point that it has managed to enter the offerings of well-known people at cruising speed. supermarkets, restaurant chains (becoming “top” take away sales) and, spectacularly, in homes. The “boom” of poke, as it once did with sushi, is boosting sales of one of its essential ingredients: the nutritious, healthy and tasty salmon from Norway. It was in the 1980s when poke crossed over from Hawaii and other Pacific islands to California, in the USA. Over the years, it has absorbed part of the typical ingredients of other cuisines, adopting Norwegian salmon as a capital and central element in its preparation. In Spain, poke did not arrive until 2017 and since then its growth has been spectacular, fitting perfectly with the healthy Mediterranean Diet, despite its exotic Hawaiian origin. In fact, according to a recent IPSOS survey for the Council of Norwegian Seafood Products, almost 20% of participating Spanish consumers have consumed it in the last six months. And about 25% have prepared poke with salmon as the star ingredient (Norway, main origin). And it is the metropolitan areas of Madrid (37%) and Barcelona (28%) that lead the consumption of poke with Salmon, according to the same Survey. But what is the secret to the success of this format? There are many factors, in the opinion of the director of the Norwegian Seafood Council in Spain, Tore Holvik. On the one hand, “we are talking about dishes of high nutritional quality that combine ingredients such as Norwegian salmon, rice or quinoa, fruits and vegetables, which are seasoned with natural dressings such as extra virgin olive oil, lime or vinegar, among others,” he explains.Likewise, poke is “very easy to prepare at home; the Norwegian salmon used is loved by the whole family, including children – who are sometimes difficult to get them to eat other fish – and it spreads a lot at both lunches and dinners. “If the ingredients are chosen well, a nutritious, healthy, as well as delicious poke can be made in just a few minutes. Therefore, quick cooking in this specific case is synonymous with gastronomic success while taking care of our health,” he argues. Holvik. And just a 150 gram serving of salmon covers the recommended weekly needs of Omega 3 and the daily amount of vitamin D while being a source of some essential minerals such as phosphorus and potassium and antioxidants such as selenium and vitamin E. In addition, the Norwegian coast, which extends into the Arctic, provides ideal conditions for these fish, which thrive in cold, clean waters, and which arrive in Spain in perfect conditions of quality, traceability, food safety and with all the guarantees of sustainability because Norway is committed to production systems that respect the sea and the environment. These are some assets that have elevated Norwegian Salmon as the favorite fish of the Spanish both to prepare in poke and in other multiple formats: roasted , grilled, in sushi or sashimi, smoked, etc. In fact, 81% of Spaniards consulted in a recent IPSOS survey are able to identify it without any help. And 42% eat salmon at least once a week. Among the benefits that consumers associate with Norwegian salmon, surveys indicate that 90% believe it is healthy; 85% consider it “tasty” and 83% value that “it is quick and easy to prepare.” Therefore, what better idea than to celebrate World Poke Day, with this succulent dish, and the best ingredient that comes from the crystalline waters of Norway.
