The number of passengers on High Speed in Spain shot up 34.3% last June, to 2.9 million, according to data from the Travel Transport statistics published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics ( INE), which also highlights a 57.3% increase in medium-distance railways, with more than 4 million passengers.
More than 450.7 million passengers used public transport in Spain last June, 18.3% more than in the same month of 2022. Urban transport increased by 21.7% in the annual rate and interurban 18.5% did. Within the interurban, the 22.3% increase in rail transport stands out.
Compared to May, the number of passengers who used public transport in Spain was 3.7% lower according to data from the statistical institute.
NEARLY 300 MILLION URBAN TRANSPORT USERS
Urban transport was used by more than 273.1 million passengers in June, 21.7% more than in the same month of the previous year.
Metro transport increased by 19.8% in the annual rate, with the Malaga metro representing the largest increase, doubling the number of users compared to the same month of the previous year. In contrast, the Bilbao metro registered the smallest increase, with 15.8%.
Urban transport by bus increased by 23% last June compared to a year earlier. Among the cities that have grouper, the greatest increase in bus transport was registered in Palma (45.7%) and the lowest in Seville, which did not change.
All the autonomous communities present positive annual rates in bus transport. The greatest increases occurred in the Canary Islands (46.2%), the Region of Murcia (30.7%) and the Valencian Community (30.3%).
In turn, Andalucía (15.8%), Aragón (16.7%) and Cataluña (16.7%) registered the smallest increases in bus transport.
AIR TRAFFIC GROWS BY 6.9%
More than 129.3 million passengers used intercity transport in June, representing an increase of 18.5% compared to the same month in 2022. By type of transport, by rail it grew by 22.3%, by bus by 16 .5%, air 6.9% and maritime 2.4%.
Commuter routes grew by 13.2% in bus transport and 20% in rail transport, while medium-distance journeys increased by 24.6% in bus transport and 57.3% in rail.
Long distance increased by 27% in bus transport and 22.7% in rail. Within the latter, High Speed grew by 34.3%.
Regarding special and discretionary transport, this was used by more than 48.2 million users in June, which represents an increase of 1.9% compared to the same month in 2022.
The number of special transport passengers fell by 2.6%, with 27.3 million users and, within this, both school and work decreased by 2.6%.
For its part, discretionary transport grew by 8.5% compared to the same month in 2022, with more than 20.9 million passengers.
