The Thuringian SPD was first National Association of party to vote against new edition of a large coalition in Confederation. At an extraordinary National Party congress, Association adopted a request from SPD youth organization Jusos.

The motion states that a renewed government with Union would mean a furr loss of credibility for SPD. Many questions have little in common. The provincial chairman of Jusos, Oleg Shevchenko, said that renewal of SPD in a large coalition could not work because of government constraints. It should not be allowed “that SPD puny be shrunk”.
The influential SPD-National Association of North Rhine-Westphalia has also warned party’s federal leadership not to get into a large coalition too soon. “When we get used to role of junior partner, we end up as a wobbly dachshund,” said NRW head of state Michael Groschek Mirror. The SPD should focus on “becoming big and strong again”. Only in this way can it constitute a genuine alternative to Union.
As a precondition for a coalition, Groschek of CDU and CSU demanded substantive concessions. “We do not draw red lines, but without concrete improvements in area of labour market, pension and health policy, it is unimaginable that a party congress will give green light for furr talks,” said SPD head of state. “Some nice headlines” weren’t enough.

On Friday, SPD federal Executive Board decided to start exploratory talks with union. Wher talks should lead to a coalition or or form of cooperation, it left party explicitly open. A federal party congress is expected to decide on 14 January 2018 wher SPD should start coalition negotiations for a large coalition.
SPD vice Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel and parliamentary managing director of SPD Bundestag group, Carsten Schneider, had expressed ir views on party congress for results. Only to give in to “opposition yearning” without talking to CDU/CSU about substantive points is not right way, said Schneider. Schäfer-Gümbel said that problem of SPD is not so much a possible grand coalition, but uncertainty within party. “We’re wrangling with ourselves,” said Schäfer-Gümbel.
