BRUNSWICK — Following an annual chili cook-off event Jan. 14 that saw a record-setting 19 cookers and $1,100 raised, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Brunswick organizers are hoping to make the entire Relay bigger than ever this year.

“We are hoping to revamp some things this year, so this is sort of a brainstorming session to see what people want and to bring in different ideas,” said Brunswick Relay for Life event chair, Kate Morris, of a community meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Brunswick High School student center, 3581 Center Rd.

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries.

This year’s Brunswick Relay, with a Disney-inspired “Wish Upon a Cure” theme, will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 3 at the high school, with 15 teams currently registered.

According to the event website, $10,322 of this year’s $100,000 goal has been raised to date. Morris said Relay organizers are trying to draw in as many participants as possible this year – whether officially part of a team or not.

She added that teams of all sizes are welcome – from just a few friends, to large community organizations. Those interested in starting a team or joining an existing team can contact her at 216- 570-1376, or kate.morris.0521@gmail.com.

“We are always accepting more teams, but we are also looking for sponsorships and volunteers who don’t want to be on a team,” Morris said. “And we are also trying to do more citywide fundraising things – not just with the teams – like our Paint-and-Sip event April 1.”

The “April Fool’s Paint-and-Sip” will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with participants receiving all your art supplies and two drink tickets for a $30 donation.

2017 Relay changes

In addition to moving the day’s events to the front of the high school, with more visibility from Center Road, the event date is later this year in order to better accommodate end-of-school-year activities, Morris said.

Other possibilities for new additions this year include more food options and kids’ activities, Morris said, with the idea of making the 12-hour Relay, which will still include all the traditional ceremonies, an event families can stop by and make a part of their day.
