A menagerie of exotic animals worthy of Noah’s Ark — including an albino kangaroo — were left to fend for themselves when their owners ran for the hills amid fears of catastrophic floods near the nation’s tallest dam.
California Highway Patrol officers checking on homes in Sutter County during the Oroville Dam crisis found the creatures, the LA Times reported.
“Our officers checked on some abandoned properties and came upon these animals including kangaroos, mini deers and zebras,” CHP officials said in a Facebook post.
The animals — including an albino kangaroo named Kenzie, red kangaroo Dottie and Marty the Muntjac barking deer — were turned over to wildlife rescuer Tamara Archer Houston and her family until the home owners returned to their properties.
“Kenzie actually sleeps inside with her owner every night in her bed in her diaper, so this has to be a whole new deal for her,” Archer Houston said about the jumpy marsupial, who is less than a year old.
Archer Houston’s family — which has 40 exotic birds, two horses, three dogs and two cats — has taken in abandoned animals for 20 years, she said on Facebook.
Nearly 200,000 people have been allowed to return to their homes — three days after being ordered to head to higher ground.
