RUSSELL TOWNSHIP, Ohio – You can help make America great by becoming an official citizen scientist participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 17-19 at The West Woods Nature Center. Bring your camera in case you have the opportunity for a magical shot that can be entered into the group’s photo contest.
The bird count is a worldwide project coordinated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. For more information, visit http://gbbc.birdcount.org.
In addition to a wall of windows overlooking a bird feeding station, the nature center has hands-on exhibits, art displays, live critters and the Treetops Nature Store for a great place to visit any cold winter day. Sort Out the Singers: Music professor Lisa Rainsong will provide birders with listening tools for discerning different birds 3:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at The West Woods Nature Center. Food Drive Bags 50 cases: Thanks to Orange Elementary School PTA, Moreland Hills School students, staff and community, more than 50 cases of food were donated to the Garfield Food Pantry in January. The food is offered directly to needy families in the community. MHS Student Council members made announcements daily and picked up items from each classroom, checked expiration dates and packed items in boxes to send. The food drive is an annual event at the elementary school.
Presidential Scholar at Orange: Orange High School senior David Miron is a candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. Candidates for the program were selected from nearly 3.5 million students expected to graduate this year from U.S. high schools. Scholars are selected based upon academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, character and involvement in community and school activities. Semifinalists will be selected in early April, and, the U.S. Depart. of Education will announce the winners in May.
They Are Liking Lichen: Find out why at a workshop 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 18, also at The West Woods Nature Center. Janet Traub and Jim Toppin, both on the Ohio Moss and Lichen Association, will present a two-hour indoor introductory session with samples to view before heading outside to search for examples.
Participants are asked to bring a bagged lunch and a hand-held lens, if possible to view them in detail. Specimens and books will be on display, and each participant will receive a free Division of Wildlife field guide, “Common Lichens of Ohio.”

Winter Choir Concert: The Orange High School winter choir will perform in concert 7 p.m. Feb. 23 in the school auditorium at 32000 Chagrin Blvd., Pepper Pike. The community is welcome to attend.
Lift Your Voice for Hunger: Join the Good Tiding Benefit Choir to raise spirits and funds for the Geauga Hunger Task Force. Practices are held Sundays 2-4 p.m. at Notre Dame Chapel, 13000 Auburn Rd. in Munson.
Open to singers, high school age and older, the spring programs of Handel’s Messiah will be 7 p.m. April 1 and 3 p.m. April 2. It may hit the road April 9 for another location. Bring your own score or purchase one for $8 at the practice. Solo auditions will take place during practices.
This year marks the choir’s 28th anniversary. Proceeds from the concerts go to seven food pantries that serve needy families year-round, including about 450,000 meals in 2016.
