Boulder County resident Alexandra Schwan was on her way home to the south Magnolia area Thursday when a moose slammed into her sport utility vehicle at the intersection of Eldora Road and Colo. 119 in Nederland.
“The moose came out of someone’s yard (or) driveway,” Schwan said. “It T-boned my SUV at the driver’s side door, smashed in the windshield, door and window.”
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the crash happened on Thursday, but referred further questions to the Nederland Police Department, which has not released any information on the crash.
The moose didn’t survive the crash, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said they issued a roadkill permit, so the meat from the 2-year-old animal could be salvaged.
“It seems like the moose died instantly or shortly after,” Schwan said. “It’s so awful. I feel terrible about the death of the animal.”
She said that she received a couple of stitches and some small cuts from the broken glass on the window. A photograph posted on her Facebook page shows extensive damage to the driver’s side of her car.
“I am OK otherwise, freaked out a little,” she said. “I am glad no other humans were involved. The (Nederland) police and EMS were great and very kind and comforting. Hopefully this will get more locals to be aware of the moose traffic and to be ultra cautious.”
