Staff and wire reports

Authorities on Wednesday identified a Long Beach man who went on a stabbing spree that left three people injured near CNN in Hollywood before he was fatally shot by police at a fast-food restaurant in late January.

Solomon Picart, 37, died at the scene of the Jan. 31 shooting, according to the coroner’s office, which said his next of kin were out of the country and there was a delay in notifying them.

Los Angeles County Medical Examiner/Coroner’s Office spokesman Craig Harvey said on Wednesday that toxicology reports were still pending, but an examination was conducted on Feb. 1.

“The final cause of death was gunshot wounds,” Harvey said.

The area is popular with tourists and is busy with employees from nearby businesses including CNN and patrons of the ArcLight Hollywood theater.

On the day of the shooting, firefighters and officers responded about 2 p.m. to the area of Sunset Boulevard and Ivar Avenue, where a suspect had stabbed a man riding a bicycle.

Korbyn Gomez, a student at the L.A. Film School near Sunset and Ivar Avenue, said after the incident that he watched as the attacker approached with a ‘big … bloody knife.”

“He was 15 feet away from me,” Gomez said. “I got away. You could tell he was going to give it to anyone who was near.”

The suspect then headed east, according to the Los Angeles Police Department officials, entered a Jack in the Box restaurant and stabbed two other men.

Officers arrived, and Picart was shot after a failed attempt to subdue him was made with a stun gun, the LAPD reported.

Picart was declared deceased at 2:20 p.m., Harvey said.

Police said the stabbings were random, and Picart did not know any of the victims. Two had critical injuries and the third suffered lesser injuries, the LAPD reported.
