CLEVELAND, Ohio — Production has begun on Disney’s “Mary Poppins” sequel in England.

Starring Emily Blunt (“The Girl on Train”) in the role of the magical nanny with the flying umbrella along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep, “Mary Poppins Returns” is set 20 years after the original.

In the movie, based on PL Travers’ series of books published after the release of the film, Mary Poppins returns to help the now-grown up Banks children find happiness after one of them suffers a tragic loss.

Miranda (“Hamilton) plays an optimistic street lamp lighter. While not technically Bert the chimney sweep, he’s essentially the Dick Van Dyke in the film.

Perennial Oscar nominee Meryl Streep plays Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. The film is being directed by Rob Marshall, who previously directed Blunt and Streep in the 2014 musical “Into the Woods.”

The original “Mary Poppins” won five Oscars in 1965, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews. It was a groundbreaking achievement at the time, mixing animation with live action. The soundtrack featured such classics as “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and, of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”

“Mary Poppins” is the latest Disney classic to get the re-imagination treatment, following the likes of “Alice in Wonderland,” “Maleficent,” “Cinderella,” “The Jungle Book” and the upcoming “Beauty and the Beast.” New versions of “The Lion King” and “Dumbo” are also in development.

“Mary Poppins Returns” is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day 2018.
