CLEVELAND, Ohio — The fifth season of Netflix sensation “Orange is the New Black” will premiere on June 9, the streaming service announced Wednesday.

The show follows female inmates at the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security prison run by a for-profit company. The story revolves around Piper Chapman, a young and wealthy New Yorker sent to Litchfield after smuggling a suitcase full of cocaine for a friend.

Season 4 ended on a cliffhanger, with Litchfield prisoners ready to riot after the death of a prisoner. An inmate holds an abusive guard at gunpoint in the final moments, but the camera cuts away before the audience learns whether or not she pulls the trigger.

The new season will be available, in its entirety, on June 9. Previous seasons lasted 13 episodes.

The fourth season brimmed with social commentary, tackling racism and sexism, and making thinly veiled references to police brutality and the police killings of unarmed African-Americans. Audiences can expect to see more of the same in Season 5.

Netflix released a short trailer for the upcoming season, which mostly shows major characters starring intently at someone offscreen.
