RICHFIELD, Ohio – A state highway patrol police chase ended in a crash Thursday afternoon in Richfield, police said.

The chase began after a state highway patrol trooper attempted to pull over a vehicle on Interstate 77 northbound, Richfield police spokesman Lt. Joe Davis told cleveland.com. The driver refused to stop and rammed into two highway patrol cruisers, Davis said.

State highway patrol cruisers continued the chase northbound along with Richfield police, Davis said. Richfield officers twice attempted to stop the car using spike strips, but the driver evaded them by driving onto the median and then in the wrong direction on the highway before diverting back northbound.

The driver crashed in Richfield and ran from the car, Davis said. He was arrested after a brief foot chase.

Davis was not able to say where exactly the pursuit began or why. The state highway patrol was not immediately available to provide additional information on the crash to cleveland.com.

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s traffic site OhGo.com shows that traffic is moving smoothly on Interstate 77 as of 4:30 p.m.
