Seven years after opening Erie’s Red Hawk Elementary as the school’s principal, Cyrus Weinberger is leaving to open another new Erie school.

Weinberger will be the principal at St. Vrain Valley’s as-yet-unnamed PK-8 set to open in the fall of 2018 on land north of Erie High School.

He plans to leave Red Hawk at the end of the school year and spend the next school year planning for the 2018 opening, according to an email sent to parents on Wednesday.

“The highlight of my career was opening Red Hawk and working with the staff and students to create a vibrant community,” he said. “I’m very excited to build a school that seamlessly connects to the high school.”

The 900-student school will be built through the St. Vrain Valley School District’s $260.3 million bond issue approved by voters in November. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for later this spring.

Weinberger said initial information meetings also are planned this spring to start engaging the community.

He noted some themes include developing a program that fits well with Erie High School’s aerospace engineering program and combining rigorous academics with a focus on meeting the needs of the whole child.

“We want to really encompass what the community values most,” he said.

Red Hawk will be the St. Vrain Valley School District’s first PK-8 in Erie, but the fourth elementary school. Along with three existing elementary schools, the district’s schools include Erie Middle and Erie High.

The neighboring Boulder Valley School District also is building its first PK-8 school in Erie, with Meadowlark set to open in the fall on 15 acres in the Flatiron Meadows neighborhood.

At Red Hawk, Weinberger said, the timeline and details of the search for a new principal are still being finalized and are expected to be shared with parents next week.

“I will miss Red Hawk immensely,” he said. “I’ve really cherished the relationships I’ve developed with students and families and teachers and the innovative spirit and energy of the school.”
