President Trump insisted that as far as he knows, no White House aides had contact with Russia before the election, and he denounced as “fake news” any suggestion he has close ties with Moscow.
“Russia is fake news. Russia — this is fake news put out by the media,” Trump said. “Speaking for myself, I own nothing in Russia. I have no loans in Russia. I don’t have any deals in Russia.”
He also defended Michael Flynn, who stepped down as national security adviser Monday after misleading White House officials and Vice President Mike Pence about what Flynn had discussed with Russia’s US ambassador.
Calling him a “fine person,” Trump said Flynn erred by not being upfront about his discussions with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak over US sanctions imposed by then-President Barack Obama.
Then Trump blamed the media and leaks of sensitive information for causing Flynn’s ouster.
