CLEVELAND, Ohio – It had been seven years since a country star sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl (Carrie Underwood). But that streak ended Sunday night.

Country superstar Luke Bryan, the man behind anthems like “Thanks My Kind of Night” and “Country Girl (Shake It for Me),” did the honors before kickoff of Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.

Bryan’s twang was in contrast to recent pop performers like Lady Gaga and Idina Menzel. But he was a fitting choice, representing the music of the South with a back home version of the national anthem that was smooth and suitable for the Houston, Texas setting.

Cleveland fans will get their chance to see Bryan when he performs at Progressive Field in July.
