HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ohio

Fraud, Brainard Road:

A woman, 89, said Jan. 30 she had been receiving phone calls from a man claiming to be a Chicago police officer and stating her grandson was in jail. The suspect convinced her to buy gift cards from Walmart and Target and provide him with the redemption codes in an effort to pay her grandson’s bond. It was reported the woman lost over $11,000 as a result of the scam.

General assistance, Jefferson Drive:

A woman said Feb. 1 her husband, a military veteran, was walking his dog when he observed a U.S. flag being flown upside down. He did not know if it was a sign of protest or if it was unknowingly being flown in that manner. She only wanted to make police aware of the situation.

General assistance, Millridge Road:

Officers were asked to speak to an eight-year-old child at Millridge Elementary School Feb. 1 about stealing school property. The principal said he was taking small items, such as erasers.

Property damage, Strathaven Drive:

A resident reported Feb. 1 her mailbox had been damaged. It was determined a city plow was responsible for the damage and the city would replace the mailbox.

Disturbance, Golfview Lane:

The nursing staff of an assisted living facility said Feb. 1 the daughter of a former resident was threatening them. Officers learned she had been talking on her cell phone about the poor quality of the staff, while she was removing items from her mother’s former room. As no threats were actually made, officers simply waited on the property until the East Cleveland woman, 50, left the facility.

Impaired driving, Interstate-271:

A Seven Hills man, 41, was arrested for OVI Feb. 2 after he ran his vehicle off the road and crashed into the center berm. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and later booked into jail.

Theft from auto, Bishop Road:

A UPS employee reported Feb. 3 someone entered his vehicle while he was working and stole $575 cash. The incident, believed to have occurred around 10 p.m. the previous night, is under investigation.

Attempted burglary, Cranbrook Drive:

A resident reported at 4:45 p.m. Feb. 4 a man, who appeared to be drunk or on drugs, was trying to get into her house. When she asked what he wanted, he told her “I am here for you.” Responding officers subsequently located the Bedford man, 24, on Brainard Road, near Fitworks. It was determined he was schizophrenic. He was taken to the hospital and placed in lock-down. Charges are pending against him in county court.

Theft, Alpha Drive:

A boy, 14, told police Feb. 4 his iPhone was stolen from an unlocked locker at Skyzone. It was later found in possession of another child, who returned it.

Disturbance, Wilson Mills Road:

Officers responded to Denny’s around 6 a.m. Feb. 5 for a report of a man, 41, who was refusing to leave after he was found sleeping in a booth. They learned he was homeless and had an active warrant with University Heights police. Officers from that city were unable to pick him up so he was given a ride to a bus stop.

Receiving stolen property, Wilson Mills Road:

Officers located a stolen vehicle occupied by four men at the gas pumps at True North Shell Feb. 5. The driver, a 20-year-old Euclid man, was subsequently arrested for receiving stolen property. A 22-year-old passenger, of Euclid, was arrested on a warrant and turned over to Euclid police. The other two men were released at the scene and the vehicle was recovered for Cleveland police.
