SACRAMENTO — The war of words continues to escalate between Democratic leaders in the biggest state and President Donald Trump.

California legislative leaders responded Monday after Trump said the state is “out of control” and suggested withholding federal funding.

In separate statements, Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and Speaker Anthony Rendon point to California’s massive economy and strong recent job growth. Rendon says more states should strive to be like California. De Leon says Trump’s threats to withhold funding are illegal and would harm seniors, children, farmer and veterans.

Trump criticized California in a Fox News interview broadcast on Sunday. The Republican president criticized a bill by De Leon that seeks to create a statewide sanctuary for immigrants living in the country illegally.
