The German shepherd that reportedly killed a 2-month-old girl last month in San Marcos has been euthanized at the owners’ request, a news release said Wednesday.
The dog was put down Tuesday after owners submitted surrender paperwork and a request for the dog to be euthanized to San Marcos Police Department. San Marcos Animal Control performed the euthanasia following its own investigation into the death of 2-month-old Skylar Dean Julius.

Emergency personnel and police initially responded to the 1000 block of Sagewood Trail at about 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, where they found the child unresponsive with evidence of numerous animal bites on her body. She was transported to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos and was pronounced dead by a justice of the peace.
The baby’s father told police he had fallen asleep when the child was napping inside an infant bouncer. He woke up about 20 minutes later to find his daughter unresponsive and cold to the touch, according to a news release.

The dog was immediately impounded following the alleged attack. The family told police the dog, who they had owned since he was a puppy, had always been non-aggressive toward the child in the past.
The girl’s father refused to take a drug or alcohol test following his daughter’s death, and investigators were not able to obtain a warrant for blood tests on him since they did not have enough probable cause, according to a previous report.

The investigation into the baby’s death is ongoing and will be sent to the Hays County District Attorney for review.
