SAN ANTONIO — A K-9 unit for a private security firm slated to start patrolling local H-E-B stores was transported to an emergency veterinarian after the car in which it was riding was struck on Interstate 35.
Police responded to the accident around 11 a.m. In the 4300 block of southbound I-35. The center and right lane of the highway were closed down as authorities cleaned the wreck, backing up traffic for about a mile.
According to Joe Lucero, a trucker who was involved in the wreck, another 18-wheeler slammed into the back of a S.E.A.L. Security patrol car after coming over a hill too quickly and running into traffic.

The trucker tried to avoid hitting the patrol car by swerving into Lucero’s lane, but he clipped the trailer of Lucero’s 18-wheeler, veered back into his own lane and then hit the patrol car.
“I don’t know what he was doing, but he didn’t see the traffic and didn’t have time to stop,” Lucero said.
A K-9 unit inside the car, named Oxa, wasn’t injured in the accident, but James Alexander, director of operations at S.E.A.L., said they decided to rush her to the veterinarian just to make sure she was okay.

The officer driving the patrol car was a little shaken up, but he was left uninjured as well. Alexander said the two were headed to a nearby H-E-B at the time of the crash.
Police at the scene declined to comment on the accident. The two lanes on southbound I-35 remained closed an hour after the accident.
