Authorities say low visibility, morning mists and, more than likely, inattentive drivers, caused traffic chaos across San Antonio Tuesday morning, particularly on U.S. Highway 90, which experienced a number of minor and major accidents, bringing traffic to a standstill..

Cory Van Pelt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said low clouds rolled over San Antonio around midnight Monday and light drizzle and mist started to pick up around 5 a.m.

“We haven’t had a whole lot of rain, so it could’ve been just enough to make the roads slick,” Van Pelt said, adding that visibility was also relatively low at 1 mile.

There were also major accidents on Interstate 10 at Interstate 35 around 7 a.m. and another major accident at Interstate 37 and Interstate 10 around 7:15.

A minor crash on U.S. 281 at Hildebrand, in which a vehicle was facing the wrong way, slowed down traffic around 7:10 a.m., as did another minor accident on Loop 1604 at Kyle Seale Parkway around 6:40.

A pileup on Loop 410 at New Braunfels Avenue involving multiple vehicles backed up traffic on the city’s inner loop.

Weather might not be the only cause of the accidents though. Josh Donat, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said the city of San Antonio is plagued by inattentive drivers.

“People use their vehicles as phone booths,” he said.

Obviously, Donat said, drivers should pay more attention to the roads, especially when roads are slick from mist and visibility is low.

“We have these weird mornings where sometimes we have 10 accidents, and perfect mornings were there are no accidents — or only one.”

The rising sun should cause the clouds and mist to disperse around 9 a.m. A dense fog advisory was also issued to counties west of San Antonio.

“It should dry out and warm up pretty quick,” Van Pelt said.
