A man gunned down by police after pulling a sawed-off shotgun on an officer had the weapon aimed “directly at (the officer’s) chest,” according to a San Antonio Police Department report released Tuesday.
Joseph Tamayo, 48, was identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner as the man who was fatally shot during the confrontation at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday inside a house in the 700 block of Vickers Avenue.

Narcotics detectives entered the home on a search warrant and handcuffed two people in the living room before continuing through the rest of the house. The officers checked each room, announcing themselves as they went.
When the officers found a locked door to a laundry room, one moved to the side shouting “Police!” as the other kicked in the door.
Tamayo was waiting, pointing a shortened 12-gauge shotgun directly at the chest of the detective who kicked in the door, according to the police report.

The detective fired his handgun one time in self-defense, police said. EMS arrived and pronounced Tamayo dead shortly after, according to the report.
Police are not releasing the name of the officer involved because he is an undercover detective.
