“Reign” Season 4 will premiere today, Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. EST on The CW. But before tuning in to the first episode of the final season, it is worth recalling what exactly happened last season. After all, the wait has been long for fans of drama series.
Last season ended with the shocking death of Queen Mary’s (Adelaide Kane) last lady-in-waiting, Lola (Anna Popplewell). The conniving John Knox (Jonathan Goad) tricked Lola into thinking that Mary wanted her to assassinate Queen Elizabeth (Rachel Skarsten). She received a letter written in their secret code giving her clear instructions to kill the English queen.
Lola handed off her child John to her husband Narcisse (Craig Parker) and told him that she had one last thing to do before heading to Scotland. She then met an assassin and executed her plan to murder Elizabeth. Of course, she was caught and executed on the queen’s orders while Narcisse looked on. We’ll miss you in Season 4, Lola!
In the French court, another “Reign” character was found to be in grave danger. After Leith (Jonathan Keltz) successfully saved Queen Catherine (Megan Follows) and Princess Claude (Rose Williams) from the Red Knights, Catherine finally gave her blessing to Leith to marry his daughter.
Leith proposed Claude and then set off to stop the Red Knights once and for all. Unfortunately, Martel de Guise (Lewis Kirk) sent his men to help Leith but they never helped him. Instead, they stab the poor boy in the gut and left him to bleed to death in the snow while his fiancée was busy picking out a wedding dress. It isn’t clear if he’s dead but it seems like he won’t last long if someone doesn’t find him soon.
In Scotland, Mary Stuart is trying very hard to unite her people and practice religious tolerance. When Catholics burn a Protestant village and the Catholic priest hangs himself, she lies to her people and informs them that she had hanged him as justice for the Protestants.
When Mary learns that Lola is dead, she blames her cousin for concocting a plan to behead her. And she’s furious. She no longer cares about peace with England. Now she wants to kill Elizabeth. She begs Gideon (Ben Geurens) to be her spy in the English court.
Mary’s brother James (Dan Jeannotte) is the only one who knows that Knox was behind Elizabeth’s assassination plan.
“Reign” Season 4, episode 1 kicks off with Mary testing James’ loyalty after hearing that he met Knox. Meanwhile, Elizabeth agrees to help Lord Darnley (Will Kemp) in an attempt to sabotage his relationship with her cousin.
