“13 Reasons Why” author Jay Asher recently heightened speculations that a sequel on Netflix could be possible.
Ten years after writing the young adult fiction, Asher released an anniversary special version of “13 Reasons Why” where Hannah Baker lived. In the original book, as well as the series, Hannah (Katherine Langford) died after slitting her wrists and bleeding to death. But in the special edition, Hannah swallowed pills, but survived after her parents arrived home and immediately brought her to the hospital.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Asher explained why he decided to write an alternate ending for the protagonist. “I like the idea of ‘We’ve learned something from this. And yet, here’s a second chance.’ Knowing as well that it was going to be difficult when Hannah went back to school to have to deal with those kids. It’s not like everything’s smooth now. In fact, it might be even tenser for her. But now there’s Clay, who’s going to be upfront that he’s there for her,” he explained.
But in the end, Asher decided to go with his gut and write an ending where Hannah will die. After all, he wanted to convey a message that some decisions have serious consequences. “Out of the seriousness for the issue, we realized we can’t go there. No matter that there were missed opportunities for her. Those opportunities aren’t there if you do this,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Hannah wasn’t the only character who was killed off in “13 Reasons Why.” The person who she talked about in her third cassette tape, Alex (Miles Heizer), killed himself. Jeff (Brandon Larracuente) also died after getting into an accident that may have been caused by Sheri (Ajiona Alexus).
“13 Reasons Why” premiered on Netflix on March 31.
