Elliott made a surprise on-air announcement on Friday that he was leaving as the lead anchor on the network’s digital station, CBSN. While he did not specifically say where he was going, he hinted at a larger role within the network.
“Although knowing how things work around here, I may see you again on Monday morning,” Elliott said before he signed off. “It has been by any measure a great stay here at CBSN.”
Viewers weren’t the only ones blindsided by Elliott’s announcement. Apparently his superiors were as well.
According to the New York Post, Elliott was recently told by a network executive that she was eyeing a bigger role for him at CBS News.
“Then Josh announced his departure without warning,” a source told the newspaper. “Executives at CBS were stunned.”
The network released a statement Monday.
“CBS News and Josh Elliott are parting ways. Josh will no longer be reporting for CBS News,” the statement said. “We are grateful for his contributions over the last year, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
Elliott came over to CBS in 2016 after a stints on NBC’s NFL coverage and ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
