The Feb. 11 letter by Richard McIntyre (“Toomey had 60,000 Reasons to support DeVos”) prompted me to dig my own letter from Sen. Pat Toomey out of the recycling bin and check the date.

Sure enough, Toomey’s “response” actually predated my Jan. 27 letter imploring him to vote against Betsy DeVos. Not only that, but Toomey’s Jan. 19, 2017 “reply” had nothing to do with Betsy DeVos; instead he detailed his reasons for not supporting policies that reduce domestic carbon emissions.
Toomey obviously did not read my letter, nor that of McIntyre and perhaps thousands of others. Recent events indicate no genuine attempt on the part of Toomey to engage his constituents in meaningful dialogue. Just ask the tens of thousands whose emails went unanswered and whose attempts to place phone calls were thwarted.
Toomey’s lack of attention is a true shame to his office. He has an obligation to consider the views and opinions of the voting public when making decisions that impact each constituent. This means taking the time to review letters, listen to emails, take phone calls, and formulate responses directly related to the concerns of citizens.
Democrats and Republicans alike are in for a long six years. We need to know we are heard.
