JERSEY CITY — A 25-year-old man tossed a loaded handgun onto the roof of a home after cops stopped to question him on what he was carrying in his jacket, police said.
At about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers from the Gang Task Force Unit were patrolling Fulton Avenue, which is classified as a “high crime” neighborhood that has seen multiple “shootings, homicides, and calls for shots fired” recently, according to a police report.
Two men wearing hoodies “tightly snugged around their heads” were spotted near Van Cleef Street and officers identified one of the men as Jahlil Tucker, of Woodlawn Avenue, the report states.
When police approached the two men, Tucker reached for something inside his coat. The 25-year-old took off running from police toward Rose Avenue and tossed a gun onto the roof of a home, police said.
Tucker was immediately arrested after tossing the weapon. Police recovered a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun that was reported stolen out of South Carolina, the report states.
Tucker was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, certain persons not to have a weapon, resisting arrest, obstruction, and receiving stolen property.
The gun arrest was announced shortly after The Jersey Journal reported there were five shootings in Jersey City in less than 15 hours, which included one man being shot in the head.
