Book title: The Evening Road

Type of book: Fiction

Genre: Literary fiction

Summary: “The Evening Road” takes place on one remarkable day in 1930 as thousands make their way from the countryside into Marvel, a town where they hope to witness a lynching and then revel in the celebrations that follow. It’s a dangerous day, and two powerful and strong-willed women, Ottie Lee Henshaw and Calla Destry, collide on the road to Marvel. Two women from different backgrounds and worlds, both fleeing the circumstances and secrets that haunt them. The book is a window into our shared American past and a reflection on much of the gross similarities we combat and endure today. The novel urges us to find strength and compassion in ourselves and others, even on our darkest days.

Author bio: Hunt is the author, most recently, of “Neverhome,” a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice selection and an Indie Next selection, winner of the Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine and The Bridge prize, and a finalist for the Prix Femina Étranger.
