CLEVELAND, Ohio – Amanda Berry, who was kidnapped and held for 10 years by Ariel Castro at his Seymour Avenue home and rescued in 2013, announced Sunday that she will be joining the Fox 8 News team in a commercial before the Super Bowl.
The 10-second ad was posted on the news channel’s Facebook page Sunday afternoon. Berry is surrounded by Fox 8 News anchors and TV personalities, and she says she will reveal her role at 8 a.m. Monday on their morning show.
Berry and another Castro kidnapping victim, Gina DeJesus, released a book together, “Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland,” in 2015. The women were taken by Castro as teenagers in 2003 and 2004, respectively, and have not made many public appearances following their rescue.
A third kidnapped woman, Michelle Knight, released her own memoir recounting her kidnapping in 2014. Knight has been in the spotlight more frequently as a child abuse advocate, and a Lifetime Original Movie, “Cleveland Abduction,” based on her life was first aired in May 2015.
The women’s abductor, Ariel Castro, pleaded guilty in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to the women’s rape and kidnapping. He was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years by Judge Michael Russo, but Castro hanged himself in his prison cell in September 2013.
