Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott on Saturday was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The 135th pick of the draft, Prescott was passed over by every single team – Dallas even declined on four occasions before finally selecting the former Mississippi State star.
Thrust into the starting role after incumbent Tony Romo suffered a back injury during the preseason, Prescott blew away even the wildest expectations.
He finished with 3,667 passing yards and 23 touchdowns against only four interceptions. He broke Tom Brady’s record for most consecutive passes without an interception to begin a career and posted the highest quarterback rating (104.9) by a rookie in NFL history.
Prescott led Dallas to a 13-3 record and No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.
He is the first Cowboy to win the away since Emmitt Smith in 1990, though if Prescott had it his way he’d be splitting it with another first-year player.
Prescott brought rookie teammate Ezekiel Elliott up to the stage with him at the NFL Honors awards presentation and joked about cutting the trophy in half so they could divvy it up equally.
Some considered Elliott the favorite to win the award. The No. 4 pick led the league in rushing yards (1,631), piling up more than any rookie in league history save Eric Dickerson.
Elliott had 15 total touchdowns and 363 receiving yards.
The former Buckeye did not walk away empty handed, though – he was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Year.
