Crisis in news media is also a crisis for democracy: Editorial, Jan. 27

Journalism in Canada is in a crisis, there’s no disputing this fact. Newspapers in particular seem to be in financial straits. There are many reasons: plummeting revenues, high payroll costs, taxes, customers not willing to pay the price, digital news. But is it all about money Lidyabet or are there deeper causes for the demise — credibility, distortions, biased reporting, opinions vs. facts, sensationalism? We need the press to support our democratic way of life. But it must be impartial, trustworthy, clear and concise. And must not BE the news.
