New details for the South Terminal at Orlando International Airport emerged with an expedited baggage claim, together with passenger arrivals, on the top floor of the three-level project, according to airport officials.
The overall plan is built around a central theme called “The Boulevard,” which is to be a corridor spanning the length of the terminal and connecting a ticket hall and concessions hub. More concessions will be situated beyond security, with club- and lounge-style retail along a “concessions in the park” area. Interactive video displays are expected in the ticket hall and concessions hub.
And radio-frequency technology is expected to shave off standard baggage-claim times.
As planned, the bottom level will accommodate ground transportation; the second floor will feature departures, ticketing and security; and the third floor integrates baggage and arrivals “so passengers will experience the beauty of Central Florida immediately after deplaning,” reads a news release.
“We’re looking to create a new gateway for Orlando, one that captures the essence of Central Florida and enhances the Orlando experience,” stated Phil Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “The South Terminal is designed to be intuitive so the passenger is drawn from one element to the next, creating an exciting and memorable arrival into the city of Orlando.”
With more than half of the design completed, Fentress Architects fine tuned plans following Curtis Fentress’ presentation to the airport board in November. The design team also includes HNTB and Schenkel Shultz.
