One suspect is dead and another in critical condition after a home invasion this morning in Pine Hills, sheriff’s officials say.

Orange County deputies responded to the home in the 6100 block of Perrine Drive just after 10:45 a.m. when a woman called saying two men had broken into her home, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The suspects put a gun to the woman’s head and were making demands, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Her son, who was also home, ran to another room and grabbed a gun, deputies said. He then opened fire on the suspects, hitting both, spokeswoman Jane Watrel said.

One of the men was seen lying dead on his back in a yard near the home.

Deputies said the man they believe to be the second suspect showed up about 20 minutes after the incident to Winter Park Memorial Hospital. Emergency crews then transferred him to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Watrel said the woman was “very shaken.”

“It was a very frightening ordeal,” she said.

Deputies said both suspects were armed. No other details about the incident have been released.

Perrine Drive is in a residential neighborhood north of Indian Hill Road, just east of North Powers Drive and about a mile from Meadowbrook Middle School.
