SANTA MONICA — A man allegedly armed with a knife was fatally shot today in a confrontation with California Highway Patrol officers in Santa Monica, authorities said.
It happened about 12:20 a.m. in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, according to Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
“The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Alexander said. “No officers were injured during the incident.”
Authorities withheld the man’s name, pending family notification.
Officers had gone to the neighborhood, which is near the Santa Monica (10) Freeway overpass, in response to a report that a man was running on the freeway. They tried to find the man, who apparently ran off of the freeway and onto Pico Boulevard.
“He ran through several commercial businesses and through the streets,” sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza told Fox11. “He ran back onto the freeway, and back down (off) the freeway as the officers were trying to make contact with him.
“At a certain point, he ran between two buildings on the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, armed with a knife, and at that time an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Mendoza said.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives were investigating the shooting. Traffic was routed away from the area while an investigation was conducted.
