Snapshot: Almost completely by word of mouth, Jandro’s, the latest nightclub to open on the St. Mary’s Strip, has built a steady clientele because of its chill factor, its cocktails and its themed nights. Thursday night draws a good crowd for Jordan Moonz’s open-mic night. Every First Friday, artists set up their canvases throughout the spacious bar and create. Poetry slams are held Monday nights.
Owner Alejandro Perez opened Jandro’s, his first bar, in late November in what was the home of the late artist Ken Thompson and the Crazy Horse Saloon before him decades ago. The original Crazy Horse bar was refinished — the American Indian symbols remain etched on the bar.
Who goes there: It’s the St. Mary’s Strip, so locals, mostly.
Behind the bar: A variety of margaritas, daiquiris and whiskey sours dominate the cocktail menu. The Dead Flower, for example, is a hibiscus-spiced margarita. The Jandro Margarita is made with damiana liquor, which is flavored with the Texas herb. Beer by the bottle and can is about average; Houston brewery Karbach dominates the taps. TNT specials (tequila and Tecate) are $6.
Vital info
Address: 2623 N. St. Mary’s St.
Hours: 7:30 p.m.-2 a.m. daily
Phone: 210-736-0688

Cost/noise: Medium/medium
Munchies: A small kitchen offers kale salads; reuben sandwiches; ham and cheese paninis; and roast beef and asparagus — all $7.
Fun and games: You won’t find a pool table or dartboard at Jandro’s. It’s more of a place to grab a drink at the bar and then meet your friends at one of the bar’s many enclaves or the large and tiered patio out back.
Soundtrack: Live music or art of some kind is offered most nights. Sir William and the Shiny Knights play funk/soul/reggae every Saturday night.
The skinny: Owner Perez thinks fondly of places like Saluté and Carmen’s de la Calle, two of the strip’s former greats that have moved or closed. Those were legendary places whose vibe was defined by the artists and musicians they hosted. He’s certainly accomplished that at Jandro’s in two short months.
