After completing the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history Sunday night, Tom Brady couldn’t find his jersey.
In the hectic aftermath thrill of the New England Patriots’ stunning overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, his super bowl jersey was missing. Anyone who knows who Tom Brady is (which, after this weekend, you have no excuse if you don’t) and how high prices go for popular sports memorabilia knows how much that jersey is worth.
Some collectors have speculated that it could be worth as much as $500,000.
That’s a pretty penny.
Brady says he thinks it was stolen from the locker room at one point after the game ended.
Maybe it happened while the team was on the field celebrating? Or when they were prying the trophy out of Roger Goodell’s death grip? Or it may have been swiped while the team did their postgame media interviews?
Either way. It’s gone.
According to ESPN, the Houston Police Department said that while no official report of the theft has been made, they are working with NFL security to locate the missing #12.
And in what is now being called #JerseyGate, Texas’ Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick took it a step further.
For Patrick, just the police department wouldn’t do – oh no – he had to bring out the big guns.
The Texas Rangers.
"In Texas we place a very high value on hospitality and football. Tom Brady’s jersey has great historical value and is already being called ‘the most valuable NFL collectible ever.’ It will likely go into the Hall of Fame one day," Patrick said in a statement Monday. "It is important that history does not record that it was stolen in Texas."
In a conference Monday, Brady called the situation "unfortunate" and told the world, "if it shows up on eBay somewhere, let me know."
