Despite its name, odds are you won’t get soaked or freeze your cleats off during Portland’s Worst Day of the Year Ride. Since 2001, the ride has repeatedly lucked out with fair weather. This was the fourteenth time it didn’t rain in the event’s 16 year history. In 2014 it was canceled due to snow.

The event, which starts at the Lucky Lab on S.E. Hawthorne and 9th Avenue, has two routes. The 15-mile urban course loops around east Portland stretching to N.E. Dekum Street near Concordia University, cutting through the Hollywood district and Laurelhurst on its way south back to the Lucky Lab. The 41.5-mile challenge course climbs over the west hills to Cornelius Pass Road House in Hillsboro, then through Forest Park, over the St. Johns bridge and back to the Lucky Lab Brewery.

The event name is derived from the belief that the ride’s original date, Feb. 8, is the coldest and wettest date in Oregon history, according to the event’s website.

And for all the weather-resistant runners out there, the Worst Day of the Year Run takes place Jan. 6 at McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale.
