An Indiana University of Pennsylvania student is jailed in connection with the death of a fellow student and fraternity brother after they fought near campus Friday night, Indiana Borough police said.
Brady DiStefano, 19, of the Johnstown area, is charged with aggravated assault in the death of Caleb Zweig of Rockville, Md., his 20-year-old Phi Delta Theta fraternity brother, police said. DiStefano was placed in the Indiana County Jail and his bail had not been set late Sunday.
Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty said more charges could be filed against DiStefano after the results of autopsy and toxicology tests are complete.
Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. has not ruled on the cause of Zweig's death.
“We can't see any visible injuries at this time. We're waiting for toxicologies,” Overman told Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV.
Zweig was “choked out” during an off-campus fight in the 800 block of Wayne Avenue between the fraternity brothers, investigators said. He was pronounced dead at Indiana Regional Medical Center in White Township on Saturday morning, police said.
A witness told police DiStefano was seen on top of Zweig, choking him, according to the criminal complaint. The witness said he broke up the fight between two and tried to save Zweig.
Dougherty declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding the fight, saying it remains part of the investigation.
DiStefano is a freshman communications major, and Zweig was a junior English major, IUP spokeswoman Michelle Fryling said.
The university is providing appropriate support to Zweig's friends and family and all of the university community, Fryling said in a statement.
“We are really heartbroken,” Fryling said Sunday.
