HAMILTON — Authorities are investigating the cause of a smoky fire that damaged the Runway gas station on Greenwood Avenue Saturday night.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the office area and roof of the station’s main building in the 1700 block of Greenwood Avenue, Fire Chief John Newbon said.

Engine 14 and Newbon arrived at the building shortly after 11 p.m. and found smoke billowing from the roof. The station was not open for business, and nobody was in the building, he said.

Firefighters were able to stop its spread to the two service bays, and had a tough time with the multi-layered roof, Newbon said.

The fire was under control at about 12 a.m.

The fire’s cause is undetermined, and Newbon said nothing at the scene pointed to anything suspicious.

A township fire marshal is investigating the fire, along with Hamilton police detectives and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
