When 49 Republican senators voted to silence Sen. Elizabeth Warren for attempting to read Coretta Scott King’s letter about Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, they stifled Massachusetts voters who elected her. They told those voters that they had no voice in the governing of America, that they were without representation. And for what? Saying something critical about a man whose worthiness the Senate was debating. If a debate about a person’s worthiness or lack of it forbids criticism then why bother at all? That’s not debate. It’s charade. When Senator Cruz called Mitch McConnell a liar he wasn’t silenced. When Tom Cotton said that Harry Reid’s leadership was a cancerous curse he wasn’t silenced. Recent weeks have seen the Republican Senate twice suspend Senate rules to push through nominees and now they silence criticism. This isn’t democracy. Voters will remember these attacks on our freedoms. When the day comes that Democrats regain control, Republicans will regret the new rules they ushered in while holding the majority. It’s doubtful that Democrats will stoop to their level but if they do, Republicans will be reaping what they have sown.
