While Samsung is hard at work in developing its Galaxy S7 successor, the South Korea tech giant is also conceptualizing some technologies that it could be debuting in the near future. One of which is a foldable smartphone, something that is unlikely to launch this year but will possibly be the future of smartphone technology.
In the recent years, more and more companies have been flaunting concept phones for a foldable handset. In particular, LG is rumored to be preparing a hybrid that switches between a phone and a tablet. Interestingly, Samsung is not letting its fellow South Korea-headquartered tech company get all of the spotlight for this. The largest mobile phone maker is also preparing its very own foldable phone, and consumers will see it in the flesh at the Mobile World Congress 2017.
SamMobile has learned from Korean-language publication ETNews that Samsung has plans of debuting the prototype of its foldable smartphone at MWC later this month. Industry sources recently leaked that a private exhibition room is being prepared for this advanced smartphone technology, so only a few or select individuals can see it for the first time.
Samsung has yet to map out the schedule on when can it officially introduce its foldable smartphones on the market. However, the fact that it is flaunting a prototype at MWC is already a big step forward into making this technology official. Sources also claimed that the company will more likely show off inward- and outward-folding devices, but only the outward-folding products have better chances of being commercialized.
Apart from flaunting the potential of foldable smartphones at MWC, Samsung is also reportedly giving select individuals a glimpse of the prototype to test the water while also promoting its subsidiary Samsung Display to other firms. Samsung is expecting other firms to take notice of its foldable phone prototype and perhaps place orders for its new screens, as per PhoneArena.
Meanwhile, rumors about the Galaxy S8 continue to swirl on the web. The latest of which pertains to how a leaked phone case suggests that the phone’s fingerprint scanner will be found at the back, alongside the camera module. Other reports claim the handset will have an edge-to-edge display that would make it appear almost bezel-less. There are also reports about the Galaxy S7 successor running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835. At this point, nothing is certain about iPhone 8’s main rival, so it’s best for users to just wait and tune to MWC 2017 and treat new information with a grain of salt.
