David Harewood thinks that his “Supergirl” character J’onn is starting to fall for Sharon Leal’s M’gann.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harewood said that he thinks J’onn, a.k.a. Martian Manhunter, sees M’gann as more than a friend. “I think [M’gann’s] courage, her strength, her personality — I think all of those, perhaps, speak to a feeling [J’onn] hasn’t allowed himself to feel in a very, very long time,” the British actor said. “I’m sure people who’ve lost loved ones or know what that’s like when they start feeling for somebody else [know] it’s very difficult to move on from somebody you’ve loved and lost. Sometimes that can be a very difficult decision to make and I think J’onn will experience a little bit of that next week.”
In next week’s Season 2, episode 11, a White Martian named Armek (Terrell Tilford) arrives on Earth with a mission to take M’gann back to Mars to face her punishment as a traitor. To keep M’gann safe, J’onn follows her while shapeshifting into different people. During the process, the Green Martian finds himself surprised about how much he cares about M’gann.
“There are moments where she knows that he’s following her and trying to protect her and look out for her because he cares for her,” Harewood said. “I think that surprises J’onn; I don’t think he ever thought he would care for a White Martian.”
“I think that’s very destabilizing for J’onn, but also, it’s nice to see him kind of fall for someone,” added the “Homeland” alum. “It’s nice to see him have those heart flutters when he sees her. … He’s definitely putting himself on the line and you see him [be] vulnerable. We’re not used to seeing J’onn be vulnerable with anybody, but he’s vulnerable with his feelings and it’s surprising to him that he has feelings for M’gann.”
But protecting M’gann from Armek becomes tricky when the villainous White Martian manages to infiltrate the DEO headquarters by shapeshifting into the White Martian fugitive. With the DEO’s security compromised, the team realizes that Armek could be disguised as any of them.
In the trailer for the episode, Winn (Jeremy Jordan) is seen seemingly firing some sort of a flamethrower at a number of people at DEO. Is that really Winn? Or is that Armek disguised as the IT whiz?
“Supergirl” Season 2, episode 11, titled “The Martian Chronicles,” airs on Monday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
