“Supergirl” stars Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima took to Twitter to thank GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) for including the CW series in the list of nominees for the outstanding drama series category for this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.
Leigh, who plays Alex Danvers on the DC Comics TV series, wrote in a tweet that they are “grateful and proud” of the recognition.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives. And since “Supergirl’s” LGBTQ love story between Alex and Maggie has been well-received by fans and critics alike, it isn’t really a surprise that the show got a nod from GLAAD.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Leigh talked about the fan reaction to the show’s LGBTQ storyline. “It has been such a wild ride and there has been an overwhelming amount of positive responses,” she said. “I mean, I’ll get little negative comments here and there, but I think that is more from the people who maybe don’t have that acceptance of what our world is today. But I’ve gotten thousands of messages and pictures from people telling me their stories. If this isn’t an amazing opportunity to speak to the heart of humanity as a whole and also touch people individually, I don’t know what is.”
In addition to “Supergirl,” the other TV shows nominated for the outstanding drama series category are “The Fosters,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Hap and Leonard,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” “The OA,” “Orphan Black,” “Shadowhunters,” “Shameless” and “Wynonna Earp.”
The awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on April 1 and in New York City on May 6.
