LOWER TOWNSHIP — A man accused of a smash-and-grab burglary at a jewelry store has been arrested.

Richard M. Schofield, 37, of Del Haven, was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, Lower Township police said.

Shortly after midnight on Jan. 31, police responded to an alarm call at Adele’s Jeweled Treasures on Greenwood Avenue. Police said a man smashed a window with a hammer and removed $20,000 worth of jewelry.

Schofield was taken into custody when officers found him walking on Greenwood Avenue with another man, who was not detained.

Evidence from the incident — including the hammer — and information obtained led to the arrest, according to police.

Schofield was being held at Cape May County Correctional Center.
