the representatives of The student associations of 26 Spanish public universities have been presented this Tuesday in Madrid a joint platform with the aim of organizing a referendum on the monarchy among the students and workers of these centers. The first will be this Thursday, at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), and the rest will be developed during the months of December and January. The goal, according to organizers, is to promote a “process consituyente” and repeat the student movement around a cause “practical and necessary”.
In a ceremony organized in the Theater of the Neighborhood of Madrid that has counted with the participation of representatives of movements of workers, students have been charged against an institution they see as “anachronistic and undemocratic”. “We are the youth that do not want to continue to accept an imposed monarchy, and a regime imposed and locked with a padlock for 40 long years that neither we nor our parents to vote”, have proclaimed the student representatives coming from different points of Spain, that have highlighted the fact that the platform is already integrated by more than half of the Spanish public universities (26 of 50). In the meeting, there were representatives from the University Carlos III, Rey Juan Carlos, Politécnica and Complutense of Madrid, University of Barcelona and the Pompeu Fabra university in the same city, the Polytechnic of Alicante and the University of Zaragoza.
This Thursday will kick off the project with the referendum in the UAM, which consists of two questions, both to answer yes/no: “Are you in favour of abolishing the monarchy as a model of State? and “if so, can you please make constituent processes to decide on the type of republic?”. The students have admitted they will not have census or security measures to avoid double voting, although “rely on the good will of the people”. “Evidently, what is central is that the vote all around the world and think about what we never have asked for. And the demands of security and control is the passed on to the institutions, for when they do” has ironizado Lucia Nistal, representative of the UAM during the act.
The project is inspired by the already launched in neighborhoods like Broadway. The other referenda, which used formulations similar two questions, will be celebrating throughout the month of December and January in the rest of universities and it is not ruled out that the current group you are adding more colleges and add dates. For example, the Pablo Olavide University of Seville is just adhere to the proposal.
“we Want to bring this debate to the study centres and universities to stop being a place of maintenance of the status quo, and are the centers critical to the service of social transformation that should be” have ensured the students at the beginning of the act, during the reading of the joint communiqué. One of the goals, according to several of the representatives, is “to revitalize the student movement” and return it to the first line of social struggles, as occurred “during the imposition of Bologna and the cuts in education”.
The call is “mainly for students, workers and college teachers”, but the organizers have stressed that “citizens who want to vote and do not have the possibility of doing so in your neighborhood, you are welcome.”
