Local officials are organizing an amateur tournament for boxers in the absence of the San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves tournament, which is taking a one-year hiatus.
The new event, called the San Antonio Gloves Tournament, is scheduled for Feb. 23-25 at Woodlawn Gym. The city-owned facility is same place preliminary rounds of the Golden Gloves tournament are conducted.
San Antonio Gloves is not an advancing tournament and is not connected to Golden Gloves. Local boxers this year are competing in the Austin Regional Golden Gloves tournament with the local event scheduled to return in 2018.
Male and female boxers age 17-40 are eligible to compete in the senior novice (0-9 bouts) and senior open (10-plus bouts) divisions.
The deadline for entry is Feb. 17. An entry form is available on the South Texas Amateur Boxing Association’s website at staba.org.
There is no fee for entering.
March 25 card: San Antonio heavyweight Tyrell Herndon will headline a local pro boxing show March 25 at the Austin Event Center, 1948 Austin Highway.
Herndon (5-0, 2 KOs) is scheduled to take on Shamarian Snider (4-1-1, 2 KOs) of Temple in the six-round main event.
High-profile pro boxers Chris Arreola, Ishe Smith and world champion Mikey Garcia, along with former Lee High School and Detroit Lions standout Travis Lewis will be on hand to sign autographs, promoter Rick Morones said.
Other local boxers scheduled to appear on the card include lightweight Xavier Wilson, featherweight Ignacio Holguin, welterweight Jairo Castaneda, bantamweight Carlos Cardenas and welterweight Daniel Baiz.
