There’s a reason why Steve Pikiell named a pair of captains at different points earlier this season. The Rutgers coach knew that his young team would need his leaders to step up and show them the way as the Scarlet Knights struggled to win games.
That’s what has happened as the Scarlet Knights have dropped 10 of 11 games since Dec. 18, including an 83-63 home setback to Iowa last Tuesday that was made more disappointing by the lack of effort.
How David Stern became an “advisor”
“They’ve got to do some soul searching and I think that’s part of it,” Pikiell said on the eve of his team’s meeting with Penn State. “Leadership isn’t an easy thing. You don’t just tap someone on the shoulder and they now how to lead.”
The two captains — Freeman and junior guard Mike Williams — are averaging 11.3 and 9.7 points, respectively.
“I’m hoping that we respond the right way,” Pikiell said. “We are a young team. Maturity isn’t one of our strengths. The other night was unusual, I hope.”
