VERMILION, Ohio – Instead of fighting the winter cold, embrace it Saturday during the Ninth Annual Ice-A-Fair in downtown Vermilion.

There will be 60 giant sculptures throughout the city, and expert artists will perform seven demonstrations of how they use chainsaws and more delicate carving tools to create exotic creations out of ice. The sculptures will mostly be along Liberty and Main streets in the center of the city, with other icy exhibits in Exchange Park and  Friendship Park.

The numerous restaurants and shops in the city will offer hot cider and cookies and some warmth to visitors. They will also be selling chances for raffle tickets. Proceeds will go to benefit Main Street Vermilion, the group that keeps the city beautiful.

The festival is free, but for $2 each, folks can see the sculptures from the warm seats of Lolly the Trolly, which will tour the city.

Other things festival goers will see:

–Pete the Penguin and Jolly the Snowman, who will walk the streets to greet children and pose for pictures

–Ice masterpieces that will be created by artists from Elegant Ice in Broadview Heights, under the direction of owner and main artist Aaron Costic

–Lighting of the “Fire and Ice” sculpture, an eight-foot-tall chimney of ice that is four-foot around, and the main event of the day. It will be lit at 6 p.m. Saturday and light up the sky for about 30 minutes.

–In addition, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Friends of the Ritter Library will sell 50 cent pieces of chocolate cakes at the library, 5680 Liberty Street, as part of the Ritter Chocolate Fest.

If you can’t make it out to the festival Saturday, the ice sculptures will remain in place for up to a week, as long as nature allows.
