Theft, Engle Road: Police went to a Crowne Plaza room Feb. 3 for a theft report.A man said he recently connected with an old friend and learned he was homeless. He allowed the man to stay with him and his son in the room due to his friend’s living conditions. They went to bed, woke up the next morning and found the friend and the victim’s laptop, medication, credit cards and other items missing. The victim said the man stole from him before.
He looked for the suspect on facebook, found his page and learned his birth date. Police discovered the suspect had a felony warrant for a parole violation. The detective bureau is investigating the incident.
Drunken driving, Interstate 71: An officer on patrol at 2:46 a.m. Feb. 15 saw a car weaving to the left while in the high speed lane. He followed it and saw the car change lanes while continuing to weave. As it went into the curb lane and weaved, the officer stopped the car.
The motorist fumbled through her purse to find her driver’s license, unaware the officer was standing next to her outside the car. She cracked open the window and extended her hand while holding the license, still unaware of the officer’s presence. The officer shined his flashlight in the car. The driver then saw him standing there. He asked her several questions, but could not understand her responses with the window almost closed. She said she came from her dad’s house because she had to put the dog to sleep. She showed signs of inebriation and said she drank a little bit. She failed sobriety tests and registered a .276 Blood Alcohol Content level, which is more than three times the legal limit.
Drunken driving, Interstate 71: An officer saw a car speeding and weaving at 2:55 a.m. Feb. 11. The car weaved across all three lanes, then quickly accelerated, reaching 95 mph in the 60 speed zone. The driver stopped after seeing the cruiser’s emergency lights. He said he was heading home from downtown Cleveland. He showed signs of inebriation. He said he had five vodka and cranberry mixed drinks. He failed sobriety tests and measured a .188 BAC level.
Theft, Bagley Road: A woman went to police after the phone her step son had was stolen from Middleburg Heights Community Center Feb. 3. The phone was tracked to a west side Cleveland address. She then suspended its service.
Initially, the Cleveland police told the woman since she filed a report locally, it could not help her. That department also told her not to go to the address at which the phone was tracked. She gave officers snapshots that showed the address.
The theft occurred while her son was watching a friend play basketball. He saw him get hurt on the court and placed his phone on the bench for about 30 seconds during which he went to help his friend. He returned and found the phone missing.
Local authorities went to the center to view videotape and possibly obtain names of nonmembers who were there. Cleveland police and the woman went to the Cleveland address Feb. 4, but an older couple lived there and did not have the phone.
Drunken driving, Pearl Road: An officer saw two cars stopped in the roadway at 8:40 p.m. Feb. 8. They appeared to be involved in an accident. A man driving a car hit a minivan that a woman was driving. There were four kids in her car. All were uninjured. The officer noted the man had a strong odor of alcohol on him. He admitted to drinking and having two beers. The man was unsteady on his feet. He said he was so due to having leg surgery. He was arrested and registered a .165 BAC.
Speeding, Interstate 71: Police stopped a car that was going 77 mph in a 60 speed zone at 12:19 a.m. Feb. 6. The driver’s speech was slurred. He showed other signs of inebriation. He registered a .153 BAC.
Drunken driving, Pearl Road: A person called from the Islander Grille at 11 p.m. Feb. 5 about a woman who was just kicked out of the bar and got into her minivan. She was driving erratically and almost hit an employee as she drove out of the parking lot. The officer saw the suspect driving on Sprague Road as she weaved outside her marked lane. He stopped her. She said she had two beers. The officer noted her slurred speech and other possible signs of inebriation. She failed field sobriety tests and provided a .207 BAC level.
Speeding, Interstate 71: An officer saw a car weaving to the right on the highway at 3:09 a.m. Feb. 4. It was also going more than 100 mph. He followed the car that exited the Bagley Road ramp and did not use a turn signal there or as he turned left onto Bagley Road. The officer stopped the car. The driver did not have his license with him. The officer saw signs of possible inebriation on the driver, who said he did not drink. He failed field sobriety tests, registering a .115 BAC.
Drunken driving, I-71: An officer stopped a car at 5:30 a.m. Feb. 4 that was weaving on the highway. He failed sobriety test and refused to submit to a breath test. A bottle of vodka was found in a duffel bag on the back seat.
