SAN ANTONIO — A 23-year-old man whose body was found wrapped and decomposing inside the trunk of a car in Universal City has been identified by police.
Universal City police Det. Sgt. Tina Vitacco confirmed Martin Gonzales was the victim found inside the vehicle. His death is being investigated as a homicide, with the cause of death pending further investigation, Vitacco said.

Officers initially responded to the 500 block of Dukeway Drive at about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, after the property owner called about a Pontiac Grand Prix that had been parked at the apartment for days. A foul smell had been coming from the vehicle and when officers arrived, they found a body wrapped in a substance that police would not describe for media, according to a previous report.
Medical examiners decided to leave the body wrapped at the time of the discovery. Police suspect foul play in the death.
Gonzales, who went missing in late January, was known by the nickname “Chubbs,” and is survived by a wife and two children, according to posts on Facebook.

A missing person bulletin shared on social media states Gonzales was last seen with a man and woman and that Gonzales drove a 2008 gray Pontiac Grand Prix, the same vehicle his body was found in.
At least two fundraising campaigns have been opened on GoFundMe in connection with Gonzales’ death. One set up by Victoria Escamilla, and another hosted by Bonnie Coco Wetta Barnett-Muller.
His death remains under investigation.
